FC Utrecht was founded in 1970. The club came to be after a merger between the three professional football clubs in Utrecht: DOS (founded in 1901 and national champions in 1958), Velox (founded in 1902) and Elinkwijk (founded in 1919). DOS had barely managed to maintain its position in the previous season, whereby FC Utrecht could proceed in the eredivisie (premier league) led by trainer Bert Jacobs.
